Start with what you know

從你知道的開始學習                    │by Aaron

English has over one million words, twelve different verb tenses, hundreds of informal idioms, thousands of slang words, lots of jargon, and on top of all that, it comes from several different root languages, so it doesn’t always make sense to ESL students (or English teachers). Learning English is not going to be easy.

英文包含超過了一百萬個單字、十二個不同的動詞時態、數百個不規則的成語、數千個諺語及很多的專業術語。更重要的是,英文字源自數個不同的語言,所以對以英文為第二外語的學生或老師而言並不容易了解。學習英文並不簡單

One way to make it easier is to start with what you already know. Lots of people already know more than they think they do. Some English words and phrases leak into the everyday lives of almost every Taiwanese student or worker.

有個比較容易學習英文的方法是,從你已經知道的開始著手。很多人其實已經知道的比他們自己認為的還要多。有些英文單字和片語其實早已經滲透到很多學生和工作者的日常生活之中。

So my advice is to look for what you know, and work from there. If you’re a banker, learn about banks in English. Chances are you know some English words that banking laymen won’t know. Things like exchange rate, transfer, money order, interest rates, etc. If you’re an engineer, there are engineering terms you know that will help you grasp the gist of articles, stories, or speeches about engineering. The same rule applies to any profession; so read articles, listen to podcasts, and watch videos related to what you know.

Not only will this method of familiarizing yourself with English help you learn faster, but it will help you learn relevant English to your profession or interest.

這個幫助你熟悉英文的方法不只可以讓你學地更快,還可以幫助你學習和你的專業和興趣相關的英文。
